Artist Statement

I have considered myself an artist for most of my life. Ten years ago, I retired from a career as a social worker and moved to Maine. I was finally able to work full-time as an artist.

I paint with watercolor, inks, fabric dyes, and acrylics on unprimed canvas. I do not plan my paintings; rather, I allow them to evolve as they will. With each brushstroke, I get a sense of what to do next, until I know it is time to stop.  I love how the colors blend and swirl unpredictably, at times, layer upon translucent layer. The vibrancy of the colors excites me and inspires me.  I allow images and shapes to come through me as I work with the paints.

I think of my paintings as visual poems or dances and consider each piece a landscape or seascape, often with a moon or sun above.  All are inspired by a love of landscapes…the Swiss Alps, the Berkshires of Western Mass, and the Coast of Maine.

I also create one-of-a-kind colored pencil cards, watercolor-collage cards, and hand-knit hats for kids.
